About Us.
The Grassroots Amateur Radio Group was founded in January of 2018, initially as a contesting group between 3 of it's founders, Mike VO1OP, Aaron, VO1FOX/IV and Jaxson, VO1JQB/VA1XN. VO1GRC was purchased to have a singular call sign for Amateur Radio contesting awards so that no particular member would receive all the glory. VO1GRC was also used for events such as Field Day, light house activation, and any other events where a radio came along.
Later, the group created it's own special event commemorating the Truxton and Pollux American Naval disaster, held each year from February 18, to March 18th. Initially, the club used special event callsigns such as VD1NUQK and VD1TP. Later, they bought the callsign VO1TAP which is exclusively used during that time to commemorate the disaster.
In 2020, the Grassroots Amateur Radio Group earned official club status and it continues to promote the interest and fellowship of HAM Radio, going back to the Grassroots of Amateur Radio, actually participating instead of just talking about doing, hence our name.
Our membership consists of both local hams along with members in Nova Scotia. We meet once a month on our Discord channel, which allows all our members to perticipate, regardless of where they are in the world.
